July is UV Safety Month

July UV Safety Month

As we soak up the sunshine this July, it’s the perfect time to focus on protecting your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The sun’s rays may feel warm and inviting, but too much exposure without proper protection can lead to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

At Sharon Community Health Center, we want to help you enjoy the summer safely. UV Safety Month is a reminder that small habits can make a big difference when it comes to your skin health.

Why UV Protection Matters

UV rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm, and they can damage your skin even on cloudy days. Over time, repeated exposure can cause changes in skin texture, wrinkles, dark spots, and most seriously, skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States.

Smart Sun Safety Tips

Here are a few simple ways you can protect your skin every day:

  • Wear Sunscreen – Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Cover Up – Long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses can shield you from direct rays.
  • Seek Shade – Stay under cover during peak sun hours, especially when your shadow is shorter than you are.
  • Check the UV Index – Your local UV index can help you plan ahead and take extra precautions when levels are high.
  • Get Regular Skin Checks – Keep an eye on changes in moles or spots, and talk to your provider about any concerns.

Sun safety is important for everyone, but especially for children, older adults, and those with fair skin. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen before heading out – even on quick errands or cloudy days.

By making sun protection part of your routine, you’re not only preventing painful burns, you’re investing in your long-term health. Check out this video from the American Cancer Society for more!
