Every day, thousands of people are waiting for the phone call that could change, and save, their lives.
More than 6,000 Pennsylvanians are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. In fact, every 10 minutes, someone in Pennsylvania learns they need a transplant. While advances in medicine have made transplantation possible for many conditions, the greatest challenge remains the shortage of registered organ and tissue donors.
That’s why Sharon Community Health Center is proud to support PA Donor Day, observed each year on August 1st.
Why August 1?
The date (8/1) represents an incredible fact: one organ donor can save up to eight lives. In addition to organ donation, tissue donation can improve the lives of dozens more people by restoring sight, healing injuries, and enhancing quality of life. Registering as an organ and tissue donor takes less than a minute, but the impact can last a lifetime.
Who Can Register?
One of the biggest misconceptions about organ donation is that people are “too old” or “not healthy enough” to become donors. The truth is that people of all ages are encouraged to register, regardless of their current health or medical history. Medical professionals evaluate each potential donor at the time of donation to determine what organs and tissues may be suitable for transplantation. Your decision to register today could one day provide hope for someone else.
Why It Matters
Organ donation offers a second chance at life for children and adults living with serious illness. For many patients, a transplant is the only treatment option available. Unfortunately, the need continues to exceed the number of registered donors. Although most Pennsylvanians support organ donation, fewer than half are currently registered. This year’s PA Donor Day campaign has an important goal: helping Pennsylvania reach 50% of eligible residents registered as organ and tissue donors.
Take One Minute to Make a Difference
Registering as an organ and tissue donor is a simple way to make a lasting impact on the lives of others. If you’ve already registered, consider taking a moment to encourage your family and friends to learn more and register as well. Having conversations about your decision helps ensure your loved ones understand your wishes. Together, we can help bring hope to thousands of Pennsylvanians waiting for a life-saving transplant.
