Public Health Week | SCHC Supports Our Community

National Public Health Week

April 6–12 marks National Public Health Week, a time to recognize the essential role public health plays in creating healthier, more equitable communities. Public health goes beyond medical care — it addresses the social factors that influence well-being, including access to nutritious food, safe housing, preventive health services, and environments where people live, learn, work, and play.

Community Health Centers, like us at SCHC, are on the front lines of these efforts, ensuring that healthcare extends beyond the exam room and into the community.

The History and Meaning of National Public Health Week

National Public Health Week was established by the American Public Health Association (APHA) to highlight the importance of public health and to advocate for policies that improve community well-being. Each year, National Public Health Week focuses on key themes such as health equity, environmental health, and mental well-being, aiming to raise awareness about public health initiatives and inspire action at the community level. It’s a time to celebrate the successes of public health efforts while also acknowledging the ongoing challenges that require innovative solutions.

Supporting Access to Nutritious Food & Personal Essentials

At the heart of SCHC’s public health mission is its food pantry, available to the public during our open hours (Monday–Friday from 8am–5pm) at 90 W Connelly Blvd in Sharon, PA. In partnership with Mercer County Food Bank, a Feeding America Partner, the pantry provides accessible, nutritious food to help neighbors meet their basic needs.

In addition to food, SCHC sometimes offers other essential items — such as clothing and seasonal necessities — as part of its ongoing effort to support overall community well-being.

Supporting Oral Health with Link the Valley

Another way SCHC supports community health is partnering with the Link the Valley Dental Van, which will visit SCHC on April 14th, 2026 from 9am–3pm to provide no-cost dental cleanings and exams. Preventive dental care is an important part of public health because oral health is closely connected to overall wellness.

Access to services like these is especially valuable because oral health needs often go untreated when cost or transportation become barriers. The dental van will return later this year, creating additional opportunities for patients and community members to receive preventive care close to home.

Building Healthier Communities

Access to nutritious food and other essential resources plays a vital role in keeping our community healthy. By providing pantry items and basic necessities, SCHC helps neighbors meet fundamental needs that can directly impact their physical and mental well-being. Ensuring that families have access to food and other resources is an important part of preventive health, helping to reduce illness and support long-term wellness.

This National Public Health Week, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Community Health Centers in advancing public health. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC LAL) recognized through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), we are part of a broader effort to expand access to quality care in underserved communities. This work demonstrates that healthcare is not just about treating symptoms—it’s about addressing the root causes of health disparities and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead a healthy life.

Get Involved - Donate to the Food Pantry

In the spirit of Public Health Week, you can help make a difference in our community by “spring cleaning” your pantry! Donate unexpired canned goods and shelf-stable food items at any of SCHC’s offices. Collection boxes are available in each waiting room. Your contribution helps ensure that individuals in the Shenango Valley have access to the resources they need to stay healthy.
