October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about one of the most common cancers among women in the United States. Early detection through regular screening remains the best way to find breast cancer when it’s easiest to treat. But prevention also begins with understanding your personal risk factors and making healthy lifestyle choices that support long-term well-being.
At Sharon Community Health Center, we’re proud to be part of a nationwide network of Community Health Centers improving access to cancer screening for underserved populations. Nationally, breast cancer screening rates among health centers have risen from about 45% in 2020 to 54% in 2024 – an encouraging trend that aligns with the Medicaid median and reflects growing access to preventive care.
Know Your Risk
Everyone’s risk for breast cancer is different, and it can be influenced by a combination of factors such as:
- Age and genetics: Risk increases with age, and inherited genetic mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2 can play a role.
- Family history: Having a close relative diagnosed with breast cancer increases your own risk.
- Lifestyle factors: Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and limiting alcohol can all reduce risk.
- Hormone exposure: Certain reproductive and hormonal factors may also contribute.
Understanding your risk helps you and your healthcare provider make informed decisions about screening and prevention.
Take Preventive Action
Early detection saves lives. The CDC recommends that women ages 40 to 74 who are at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. Women with higher risk factors may need to start screening earlier or be screened more often.
Here are steps you can take today to protect your health:
- Learn your family history and share it with your doctor.
- Ask if you should meet with a genetic counselor to discuss your risk.
- Schedule routine exams and screenings as recommended.
- Adopt healthy habits. Stay active, eat well, and avoid smoking.
Your doctor can help determine the best screening schedule for you and refer you to a trusted imaging provider for mammography.
Partnering for Prevention
