Aging is a natural part of life, but it doesn’t have to mean losing independence, vitality, or joy. September is Healthy Aging Month, a time to celebrate the opportunities that come with growing older and to focus on ways to maintain health, wellness, and purpose.
How Community Health Centers Support Healthy Aging
Community health centers across the U.S. provide a wide range of services to help older adults age well—from dental care to behavioral health and even transportation support. While every health center is unique, the mission is the same: to provide accessible, patient-centered care.
Here at Sharon CHC, we focus on comprehensive primary care, preventive screenings, and wellness services to help our patients stay healthy and independent. Our team approach ensures that older adults in our community have the support they need to thrive.
Tips for Healthy Aging
While health centers provide vital services, there are also many things you can do each day to promote healthy aging. Sharon CHC provider Dr. Byshenko shares these simple, practical strategies:
1. Be proactive with your health.
“Visiting your physician and dentist every year for the check-up, taking prescribed medications, doing required tests, and vaccinations allows keeping an eye on any changes and addressing issues while they are still manageable.” Staying on top of your health ensures concerns are caught early, when they are easiest to treat.
2. Eat well most of the time.
“Sticking to a healthy diet for most days helps too, and who knows, maybe cooking will become a new hobby?” Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Small, consistent changes to your diet can prevent chronic conditions and support energy.
3. Keep moving.
“Do you know that exercise, even simple walking more than 3,800 steps a day lowers risk of dementia by 25%?” Walking, stretching, or light strength exercises can boost both your body and mind.
4. Stay socially connected.
“Social interactions are important; they keep us busy and our brain active. Learn something new every day, do what you have never done before.” Strong relationships and social activities improve emotional health and keep the mind sharp.
