2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the community health center movement, and what a journey it’s been! Since their beginnings in 1965, health centers have grown from a bold idea to an essential part of our nation’s healthcare system, now serving 1 in 10 Americans across the country.
At Sharon Community Health Center, we’re proud to be part of this remarkable story. National Health Center Week (August 3–9, 2025) is a time to reflect on how far we’ve come, and to look ahead with renewed purpose.
60 Years of Growth, 60 Years of Impact
Community Health Centers (CHCs) were founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to quality care, regardless of income, insurance status, or background. Over six decades, CHCs have transformed that belief into action by delivering comprehensive, culturally responsive, and affordable care in thousands of communities across the U.S.
From just two pilot sites in the 1960s to over 1,500 health centers today, this model has expanded to include medical, dental, behavioral health, and enabling services all under one roof. The impact is undeniable: improved health outcomes, reduced hospitalizations, and healthier communities.
Today, CHCs serve:
- 1 in 5 people living in poverty
- 1 in 5 rural residents
- 1 in 5 uninsured people
- Over 9 million children
- Nearly half a million veterans
CHCs serve 10% of the U.S. population but represent roughly only 1% of total annual healthcare spending nationwide. Keeping people healthy by providing comprehensive primary care doesn’t just save lives – it saves money.
25 Years of SCHC: A Local Expression of a National Mission
At SCHC, we’ve been bringing that mission to life in Sharon, PA for over 25 years by providing medical care, behavioral health support, and pain management services – all tailored to the unique needs of our patients. Our team is committed to removing barriers to care and helping individuals and families lead healthier lives.
We also recognize that good health goes beyond what happens in a clinic. That’s why SCHC partners with local organizations like Mercer County Food Bank to offer an on-site food pantry and support the Food is Medicine initiative, because access to nutritious food is critical to wellness.
Honoring Our People and Partners
During National Health Center Week, we take time to celebrate the dedicated staff, patients, and partners who make this work possible. From our front desk team to our clinical providers, every person at SCHC plays a role in creating a welcoming and inclusive space for care.
We also honor the organizations and individuals who work alongside us sharing our commitment to a healthier Mercer County.

Securing the Future of Community Health
Even as we celebrate, health centers across the country are facing urgent funding threats. Federal support for CHCs is set to expire in September, and new legislation, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” could increase uncompensated care costs by an estimated $7 billion annually, jeopardizing care for 4 million patients.
These combined pressures could force CHCs to make impossible choices: cutting staff, reducing services, or even closing sites. The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) projects these changes could lead to up to 6,000 preventable patient deaths each year.
At SCHC, our commitment to the community is unwavering, but continued investment in community health is essential to keep our doors open and our services strong. We urge policymakers to prioritize funding for health centers and protect access to care for the people who need it most.
Looking Ahead
While we’re proud of the progress made over the past 60 years, we know there’s more work to do. At SCHC, we’re focused on the future and are working to expand access, deepen our community partnerships, and continue to adapt to the evolving needs of those we serve.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Whether you’re a patient, supporter, partner, or neighbor, we are grateful for your trust and your belief in the power of community health.
